Sticktoitiveness…I wasn’t even sure if it was a real word, but it seemed to describe the drive I needed stick with my training plan today.   According to dictionary.com, stick-to-itiveness is defined as dogged perseverance or resolute tenacity…..  It was a very long Monday, and they’ve added these random cases to my already extremely large caseload at work.  But anytime, I get frustrated, I just say “thank you God for my job.”  All day, I told myself, as soon as I get home I’m going to the park, getting in my quick run, and coming home to relax.  As soon as I got home, I was about to put on my work out gear, and my little sister called.  She said, “Hey are you going with us to sing Happy Birthday to our great Aunt?”  Probably not, I reluctantly told her I had to stick to my training plan.  Then she laid the guilt trip on me.  “This is your oldest living relative on your Dad’s maternal side, she may not have another birthday next year, how would you feel if you missed this opportunity?”  Ugh, she’s such a drama queen, but she had a good point and the birthday aunt is my Shopping Cousin’s mother, so I knew she would want me there too.  I told my sister, you better go to the gym with me, because you know it’ll be too dark to run alone outside…..  Mom, Dad, both sisters, my niecy poo, and couple other cousins, gathered in my Aunt’s house, sang happy birthday, and enjoyed a delicious lemon filled birthday cake. My Shopping Cousin jokingly said “you gonna put that cake on the blog?” I told her yep, and the gym workout that’s happening, when I leave from here….. It was almost 9 at night, before me and my little sister finally made it to the gym.  She joined me on the indoor track.  When I started running, she ran with me, and then she asked, “Wait, a minute, what week are you on???” She was worried, because I told her I was training for a half marathon.    I told her, it’s just week 2, and she was relieved like “oh okay, because I’m not running 13.1 miles.”  She did great, and finished all of the interval runs with me.  So now you know even though life throws “surprise” birthday gatherings, with a little sticktoitiveness you can still keep up with your running goals.

  1. Great job Carli, I am glad to got a chance to celebrate with your fam amd still worked out. One day I will get there….lol

  2. Sticktoitiveness. Now there is a word that I really have to start sticking to! I have just less than 20 days until my half and I think that I may have to walk most of it, but my goal is just to finish it. A few of my friends are doing it with me, but I know they are all runners and will take off ahead of me. Mark (my hubby) is going to do the marathon too. Since it the Woman’s Half Marathon we are all trying to get him to run in a pink tutu! Ill let you know how I do!
    Keep on Running!
    Tammy

  3. Good Job Carli. What program are you using to train for the Half Marathon??

  4. Go Carli! I know what you mean, if you just decide you’re going to do it, no matter what, then you will find a way to get things done. I keep checking in with you when I need a little sticktoitive-ness for me.

  5. Linda, it certainly wasn’t easy to go to the gym that late, but my philosophy is that people make time for the things they want to make time for, and they’re “busy” with whatever they chose to be “busy” doing. You can do it!

  6. Tammy if you get your husband to run in a pink “anything”, that’s a pic I have to see! LOL

  7. Hey Kim, I’m starting over at the VERY beginning, back to the couch to 5K. The LLS team in training is going to provide me with the half marathon training schedule. Of course, I’ll share it with you guys, once I get it.

  8. Angela, I’m glad my stories help you “stick” with the program, and in return, you all inspire me!

  9. Have I mentioned that I think you rock! How great that you’ve got that sticktoit attitude. I have been so lazy lately. I’m gonna get with the program! Here’s to stiking to it…no matter what. 🙂

  10. Jenn, you’ve got the right attitude, that’s step one!

  11. Carli, you are an inspiration to me and many others. I downloaded you 5k podcasts, thank you for making them. I am sure that took a lot of work! I am currently on week 6, D3 is Sunday. I plan to continue to 10k, not sure about the half marathon yet. I just wanted to tell you that if i had not found your podcasts I probably wouldn’t have made it this far. I have a nano and that first run with no music about did me in! The silence was unbearable! Did you do a podcast for the bridge to 10k? Thanks again for all you do! Happy running!

  12. Hey Lachelle, congrats on wanting to take it to the next level. I’m in the process on creating the Bridge to 10K podcast now, I have another studio appointment tomorrow.
