My monthly Class Pass allows me unlimited workouts at boutique studios across St. Louis. So, I decided to be adventurous and try a Nia class.

I had no idea what it was, I’d never heard of it.  In my class, there were only 5 of us in the dimly lit studio.  The instructor was warm and friendly, she gave off a yogi-we-love-the-world vibe.  I told them I was new, and the instructor asked one lady to share her 1st class experience with me since I was a “Nia Virgin.” The lady told me that she’s a high powered executive and she cried during her first class because of how good it made her feel. My spidey senses tingled a little, wondering what the heck I had just signed up for, but hey, I like adventures.

The best way I can describe Nia is all mixed up. It seems like a combination of Zumba, dance, martial arts, and yoga. It was really interesting. I’ve never been to a fitness class quite like it. One minute, you think you’re doing yoga, and the next minute you’re shimmying and shaking your shoulders like a pop star. Then you feel like you’re doing a country line dance, followed by martial arts.

I like that Nia really embraces you being free to do what feels best for your body. Unlike Zumba, its not choreographed. It’s really low impact, so if you have knee problems this class is great. We “danced?” to really nice inspirational music to like India Irie and John legend. You just move your body with the flow of the music.   At one point it reminded me of a scene from countless hippie movies where people have incense (or other things) burning and are dancing freely in the meadow. I giggled at myself in the mirror as I twirled about, swirling my hands,”making my spine dance.” It’s a gentle workout and a great way to unwind from a busy day. So glad that I tried something new!
